Why Onoma Onsen is so captivating 《Yakushima Life & People Vol.5》

How many people know that Yakushima has hot springs?
Some people may wonder why this is the case, since Yakushima does not have any volcanoes, but in fact Yakushima is part of the Kirishima volcanic belt, and hot springs gush out from Kirishima to Sakurajima, Ibusuki, and all the way back to Yakushima.

What may be even more surprising is that such a small island as Yakushima has not one but eight natural hot springs, each of which is unique and charming.

This time, I would like to introduce Onomaida Onsen, which is known as one of the most representative hot springs on Yakushima.

This hot spring is located in the village where I live, and it is a familiar place where I take my children every evening. Moreover, even among locals, Onoma means hot springs, so Onoma is an indispensable part of this village.

What's more, this is a genuine hot spring with water bubbling directly from the source right under your feet.

Because it is such a natural hot spring, there is a lot of information about Onoma Onsen online aimed at tourists who love hot springs, but today I would like to introduce the hot spring from the perspective of someone who uses it every day. There is also a lot of information about the hot spring that is surprisingly unknown even to people who live on Yakushima, so I would like to take this opportunity to write about it so that I don't miss anything. Furthermore, I would like to take full advantage of the benefits of living in a village and share the new role and potential of Onoma Onsen that I have discovered through interviews with key people at the hot spring.
