Thoughts on Yakushima

by Makiko Sugishita (Founder & Guide of KaleidoForest)

Listening to the voice of life from the forests of Yakushima

When you surrender yourself to the forests of Yakushima,
The sounds of the wind, water, and the trees resonate deep within your body.

Born from this "dialogue" with nature, our programs offer a time to harmonize the mind and body, and reclaim one's nature-given sensitivities.
Based on international-level knowledge of forest therapy,
we have carefully designed a process that allows each individual to connect deeply with nature.

For the past 20 years, I have worked with people across Africa and Asia in the fields of international public health.
The “wellness of life” was the theme of my work.
After returning to Japan, I realized that a more fundamental connection with nature is what
is the real, underlying foundation that supports human life. Drawn to its wild forests and abundance of nature, I moved to Yakushima.

My initial experiences with Yakushima’s forests are what transformed the focus of my life from individual health to community and planetary health.
This is also a journey of expanding consciousness.
Remembering that we are part of nature;
in the silence of the forest, we will gradually regain our lost wholeness.
